Boss guide - tutorial

Iron Mask Killer

The first thing the game puts in front of you is a masked assassin with a modest health bar and unusually clear telegraphs. It is a lesson wearing a boss costume.

Part of this page comes from preview coverage of a build that is not final. Anything marked Preview is rewritten once the retail build is playable.

The short answer. Treat this as a tutorial and it will teach you the entire defensive language of the game. Treat it as a damage race and you will spend the rest of the game blocking.

Why this fight exists

Every action game has a first boss that is secretly a syllabus. This one is unusually honest about it: the health pool is small, the attack set is narrow, and the recovery windows are generous. The mask is doing thematic work - a featureless face, functional armour, a professional rather than a monster - but mechanically the encounter is a classroom.

It also sits where it does for narrative reasons. Soul is introduced as competent, and beating a low-level enforcer establishes that without spending the stakes of the sixty-six-day countdown.

What it teaches

  • Dodge on red. Unblockable attacks are introduced before anything complicated.
  • Parry on everything else. The punish windows on this fight are wide enough that a missed read is survivable.
  • Reposition, do not retreat. Success comes from moving around the enemy, not from backing away.
  • The meter matters. Even here, blocking a heavy attack costs you a visible chunk of Sha-Chi.

About the phase table going around. Several sites describe this fight as four phases split at 75%, 50% and 25% health, each introducing one mechanic. That specific structure appears in wiki-style pages that also contain other unsourced claims. We are marking it Unconfirmed rather than repeating it as fact. The teaching intent is consistent everywhere; the exact percentages are not.

How to beat it

  1. Watch the first thirty seconds without attacking. Learn which of its openers are red. There are few enough that one pass is enough.
  2. Parry the normal strings, dodge the red. Do not block. If you block here, you will block later, and later it will kill you.
  3. Punish after a parry, not after a dodge. A parry gives you both the meter swing and the position.
  4. Do not spend Sha-Chi on heavies until it is below half health. Early on you need the budget for mistakes.
  5. When it starts chaining faster, stop trying to extend combos. One clean exchange beats three greedy ones.

If you are stuck

If you are dying here repeatedly, the problem is almost always input discipline rather than reactions. Two specific fixes:

  • Stop holding block between exchanges. Holding block is the single biggest Sha-Chi leak in the early game.
  • Reduce your combo length by one hit. New players die finishing strings they should have abandoned. The last hit of a string is the expensive one.

On Hellwalker the same mechanics apply with tighter punish windows and more health, so a fight that was a tutorial becomes a genuine read test. If you are replaying, this is a good benchmark for how much your timing has actually improved.
