The short answer. Roughly fifteen bosses are named publicly. The director has said the full game has at least fifty, because every weapon is earned by beating one. Everything shown so far is technically side content.

What "fifty bosses" actually means
In October 2026 interviews the director put the count at "at least fifty, possibly more," and gave the reason: every primary weapon and every Phantom Edge is earned by defeating a boss, so the boss count has to at least match the weapon count.
Two things follow. First, most of those are side bosses, not story gates. Second, the fights shown publicly so far are unrepresentative - the director has confirmed that encounters like Coppermaul and the Chief Disciple belong to a single optional questline.
So the real story bosses are still unseen. That is worth knowing before you read any ranking of "hardest bosses" published this week. Nobody has fought them.
Boss practice and phases
Two quality-of-life systems change how punishing the game feels:
- Phase checkpoints. Reach a boss's second phase and a defeat returns you to that phase, not to the start. Long multi-phase fights become practice sessions on the part you are bad at.
- Rematches. Preview coverage describes a mode that lets you re-fight defeated bosses, with some hidden bosses reachable only that way. Preview This is consistently reported but not detailed officially.
