Difficulty modes, and who each one is for

Four modes, and the differences are not just damage multipliers. One of them changes how enemies think, which matters far more than a health number.

Part of this page comes from preview coverage of a build that is not final. Anything marked Preview is rewritten once the retail build is playable.

The short answer. Wayfarer for the story, Pathbreaker for a normal first run, Hellwalker once parry timing is automatic, 66 Days for a second playthrough. You can adjust difficulty during play.

The four modes

Difficulty modes as announced at the August 2026 State of Play
ModeWhat it changesWho it is for
WayfarerLower combat tax; story-first tuningAnyone who wants the world and the fights without a wall
PathbreakerThe standard tuningA first playthrough for most people
HellwalkerHarder fights plus adaptive enemy AIPlayers whose parry reads are already reliable
66 DaysThe highest challenge tier, named for Soul's countdownA second run, or a deliberate ordeal

Confirmed Four modes were confirmed at the 17 August 2026 State of Play. Earlier coverage listing three modes predates that broadcast, and older names such as Story, Standard, Hard, and Sha-Chi Master are out of date.

What actually changes

The meaningful difference is not the health bar. Hellwalker adds adaptive enemy behaviour - enemies adjust to punish repeated, predictable routines. That is a design change, not a slider.

What this means in practice: on Hellwalker, the strategy that got you through a boss stops working the fourth time you use it. You are pushed toward varied strings, weapon swaps, and deliberate repositioning rather than one reliable loop. That is also why it is a poor choice for a first run - you have no reliable loop to vary yet.

Not confirmed. Whether 66 Days adds a real countdown mechanic, or is simply a harder tier with a thematic name, has not been explained by S-GAME. Pages claiming that each death consumes a day are extrapolating from the story premise. We are not treating that as a mechanic.

Which one should you pick

  • You play games for story and world. Wayfarer. There is no achievement penalty for it, and the game is not designed to shame you out of it.
  • You have finished a Sekiro or a Nioh. Pathbreaker. It will still push back.
  • You finished a Sekiro and want the ceiling. Start Pathbreaker, move to Hellwalker once you can read red without thinking. Not before.
  • You are on a second run. 66 Days, with a full arsenal and knowledge of the telegraphs.

Can you switch later

The PS5 store listing advertises adjustable difficulty: "you can reduce the overall challenge of the game by choosing an alternative pre-set difficulty level." That phrasing suggests lowering mid-run is supported. Confirmed as a store claim.

Whether you can raise it freely has not been confirmed. If you care about a clean difficulty run, choose deliberately at the start rather than planning to move up later.

Accessibility is part of this

PS5 carries eight listed accessibility features, including adjustable difficulty, full subtitle support with advanced options, per-channel audio volume, 3D audio, control and tutorial reminders, and manual saving. For a game built on precise defensive timing, the subtitle and reminder options are more relevant than they sound.

Questions people actually ask

How many difficulty modes does Phantom Blade Zero have?

Four: Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker, and 66 Days.

What is the hardest difficulty?

66 Days is the highest tier. Hellwalker sits below it and already includes adaptive enemy AI.

Can I change difficulty mid-game?

The PS5 listing advertises adjustable difficulty during play. Lowering it is described; raising it freely is not confirmed.

Does 66 Days have a real countdown?

Not confirmed. The 66-day limit is the story premise. No official source describes a gameplay timer that penalises deaths.
